I had to read some of his letters to Isabella in college (American English), and.. I didn't know you could get a headache from eye rolling, but it happened.

Think it was just that teacher, because we didn't read a lot of early women writers either. The Norton Anthology is admittedly not comprehensive with early American writings that aren't by Europeans, but there were mm.. from what I remember, at least origin and trickster fables and some of the poetry that's survived the years.

And yes, happy to read better sources. :D
